Berks volleyball finishes 2-1 at quad match

READING, PA (September 18, 2010) - The women's volleyball team suffered its first defeat of the season, but finished the day with a 2-1 record at the Penn State Berks quad match on Saturday afternoon in Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (7-1) opened up the day with a 3-1 win over Delaware Valley (21-25, 25-13, 25-13, 25-18).

Berks and Arcadia College had a back-and-forth battle that had the crowd on the edge of their seats until the final point. PSB took the first game 25-8, but Arcadia rallied over the next two sets (25-22, 26-24). The Lions came out on fire with a 9-0 lead in the fourth set, eventually winning 25-14 and forcing a fifth set tiebreaker. In the decider, there were five lead changes and five ties, but Arcadia pulled it out 15-13.

With the first taste of defeat this season, the Lions bounced right back for a 3-0 win over Washington College (25-22, 25-17, 25-19).

Freshman Amy Shelton led the Lions attack with 43 kills and only seven errors throughout the three contests. She also had three aces, five solo blocks and 19 digs. Jerica Detsch had a team-best 53 digs and racked up 40 kills on the day. Detsch was a key part of the Lions comeback bid against Arcadia with a match-high 16 kills, including four kills and a block in match five.

Glenda Ngo handed out 61 assists, 31 digs and eight aces. On the season she now has 211 assists and 20 service aces. Suzi Shelton had 25 kills, while Rachel Sweeney recorded 18. Freshman libero Katie Sostak had 48 digs.

In the 12 sets played, the team compiled 140 kills with only 40 errors. They also finished with 17 aces, 11 solo blocks and 10 block assists. In the second set against Delaware Valley, Berks was flawless with 15 kills and no errors.

The women will return to action on Monday, September 20 in a nonconference contest against Kutztown University at Pine Grove High School.
