Men's soccer team drops season opener to Alvernia

Reading, PA (September 1, 2010) – The Penn State Berks men's soccer team dropped its 2010 season opener by a score of 5-0 against visiting Alvernia University on Wednesday afternoon.

The teams battled through an even first half, with the Crusaders taking a 1-0 advantage into the first half intermission. The lone goal came off the head of EJ Logan on a corner kick supplied by Eric Frank.
COLLIN MCCORMICK had a shot on goal in the first half for Berks, but was unable to get it passed the diving goalkeeper.

Alvernia came out with a goal nine minutes and 40 seconds into the second half and followed with three more in the span of seven minutes.

Jason Stoner nearly got Berks on the board with a goal late in the second half, but the keeper made a leaping save on his header toward the back corner.

Penn State Berks received strong play out of senior keeper Jonathan Martin. He made three saves throughout the game and let up just one goal. Martin also came out of net to meet the attack and stop more scoring opportunities for the Crusaders.

The men will return to action on Friday and Saturday at the Goucher Tournament.
