Lion's drop heartbreaker in season opener

IMMACULATA, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team dropped a 74-71 nonconference contest on the road to Immaculata University on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions took a 24-22 lead with 4:17 remaining in the first half when Jasmine Harris-Kane netted two of her 14 points. Berks took a 41-31 lead into the half and maintained it throughout much of the second.

The Mighty Macs grabbed a 72-71 lead off a 3-pointer by Bridget Wells with 52 seconds left in the contest. After Immaculata converted a pair of free throws, the Lions used a timeout to set up their offense. Harris-Kane managed to get off two 3-pointers, but was unable to send the game into overtime.

Senior Steph Binder had a fine shooting performance to finish with a team-best 23 points. Binder was 8-for-12 from the floor and was 7-for-8 from the charity stripe. Taylor Kreider chipped in 14 points in her collegiate basketball debut.

Dorian Bishop grabbed 12 boards and Jamie Norris had 10 to help the Lions outrebound Immaculata 49-46. The Mighty Macs, however, created many second chances with 21 offensive rebounds. The Lions were also hampered by their 2-for-17 shooting from beyond the arc.

The women will return to Beaver Community Center to host Cedar Crest on Tuesday, November 23 at 7 p.m.
