Boxscore

READING, PA (October 7, 2010) - The Penn State Berk's women's volleyball team won a 3-2 nail biter over Marywood University on Thursday night in a back-and-forth battle that wasn't settled until the final point was scored in the 19-17 win of the fifth set.

The teams exchanged the first four sets, with Berks dropping matches one and three (17-25 and 21-25), but winning the second (25-15) and fourth set (25-23) to force a fifth set tiebreaker.

In the fifth set, the Nittany Lions staved off the losing point four times by not allowing back-to-back points by the Pacers. With the score even at 17 apiece, Berks got a point off a Marywood error and earned the victory when Amy Shelton smacked home her season-high 21st kill of the game.

Shelton stepped up her game in the final two sets, proving once again why she earned the conference player of the week status. In addition to earning the match clinching point, she teamed with Christine Kantonides for a block to win the fourth game. Shelton had a four total blocks.

The final set had everyone in the Beaver Community Center holding their breathe as the ball would come down on Berks side with the possible game ender. But Rachel Sweeney and Jerica Detsch made acrobatic diving saves during the same rally to keep play alive with the score 15-16. Also in the decisive set, the Lions collected 10 kills and committed just one error to help improve their record to 14-3.

Sweeney delivered one of her finest performances of the season, finishing with 12 kills and only five errors on 34 attempts. She also notched 10 digs and had an ace.

Suzi Shelton turned in a stellar performance with 11 kills and only three errors, while Detsch added nine and had a team-high 19 digs. Glenda Ngo had 15 digs and handed out a season-best 47 assists.

The women will host Penn State Brandywine tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
