READING, PA (October 2, 2010) - MACKENZY DAWSON and TAYLOR KREIDER each tallied two goals to help the Penn State Berks women's soccer team end a two-game skid with a 6-0 win over the College of St. Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon.
The win improves the Lions record to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference standings.
Cassidy Dawson recorded her second shutout of the season, making three saves and receiving some help from the cross bar. In the 61st minute, Dawson dove to her left and deflect a shot by Diane Da Silva into the cross bar to preserve the shutout.
Dawson had limited action in between the pipes, thanks to the stingy defensive play by her teammates. Madison Litwin, Volovar, Kaiti, EMILY SIMMONS and ASHLEY PARDOSKI kept the Eagles offense at bay, allowing just five shots total.
Lexi Shumate gave Berks a 1-0 advantage after beating the keeper into the right corner. ALYSSA SCHEIDT provided the first of her two assists on the goal. Scheidt added a goal in the second half with a chip shot over the keepers head from 20 yards out.
MACKENZY DAWSON received a pass from LYNDSAY NAUGHTON in front of the goalie box. When the keeper came out to stop Dawson, she used a crossover to shake the keeper and had an easy goal on the wide open net.
"I just took the pass and was able to deke the keeper," said Dawson. "It helped that our team was able to connect on our passes. It felt good to get that two goal cushion before halftime."
Dawson capped off the scoring with a goal in the 88th minute. She grabbed a rebound and ripped a shot into top right corner, her first multi-goal game this season and third of her career.
"The team effort was there today, especially in the second half," said head coach Adrian Munteanu. "MacKenzy and Lexi played well for us."
Kreider added her 11th and 12th goals this season in the second half. On both goals, Kreider used great footwork to breeze past the defense and keeper.
The Lions held advantage in both shots (31-5) and corner kicks (7-1), something they were unable to do in losses to Alvernia and SUNY IT this past week.
"It's a good win because it is a conference win," said Munteanu. "There are still a lot of things we need to work on. We need to do a better job connecting passes on a consistent basis. We need to do a better job recognizing the options early."
The women will host a nonconference tilt with Washington College on Tuesday, October 5 at 4 p.m.
