Berks finishes off perfect weekend with Saturday sweep

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 16, 2010) – The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team capped off a perfect weekend with wins over Penn State Abington and Gallaudet to go 4-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.

Berks opened the match with a 3-0 sweep over Abington. Gallaudet, who handed Berks its only conference defeat on September 25, entered the match with a 3-0 record on the weekend. The Nittany Lions (20-3, 7-1 NEAC) would emerge with a 3-2 suspense filled victory.

Berks grabbed the first set by a score of 28-26, followed by a 25-14 win for the Bison. The Lions lost a heartbreaking 26-24 set, before winning the fourth and setting up a fifth and final set. In the winner take all set, Berks prevailed with a 15-13 win.

In the match with Gallaudet, four Nittany Lions finished with double-digit kills. Freshman Amy Shelton led the way with 17 kills followed by Rachel Sweeney with 12. Jerica Detsch had 11 and Suzi Shelton chipped in with 10.

Amy Shelton turned in a dominant performance at the net with six solo blocks and one assist. Christine Kantonides was also solid, assisting on three blocks. Kantonides also had a team-best three aces.

Glenda Ngo handed out 43 assists and had 16 digs, while Katie Sostak recorded a season-best 24 digs.

The Lions will return home to host Lancaster Bible at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 21 at Beaver Community Center.
