Berks sweep conference matches on Friday

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 15, 2010) - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team started this weekends North Eastern Athletic Conference play with wins over Penn State Harrisburg and St. Elizabeth at Gallaudet.

Berks has upped its record in the conference to 5-1 and improved to 18-3 overall.

The Lions downed Harrisburg 3-1 in the opener with set scores of 25-17, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-23. Berks then cruised to a 3-0 win in the nightcap with St. Elizabeth (25-10, 25-8, 25-12).

In the win over Harrisburg, Berks collected 10 service aces and nine total blocks. Suzi Shetlon led the way with two aces and three solo blocks. JERICA DETSCH also picked up three solo blocks, while CHRISTINE KANTONIDES assisted on three. Shelton (11), Detsch (10) and AMY SHELTON (16) each had double-digit kills.

GLENDA NGO had 37 assists and a game-high four service aces. Freshman KATIE SOSTAK had a team-high 17 digs.

In the sweep of St. Elizabeth, RACHEL SWEENEY led the Lions with 10 kills and freshman ROBYN FIORE had a game-high 12 digs. CHRISTINA PETTET and Kantonides had five kills. SUZI SHELTON tacked on three more service aces, while Ngo and Kantonides each tallied three.

The Lions will wrap up the conference play at Saturday against Penn State Abington at 10 a.m. and look to avenge its only NEAC loss with a noon match against Gallaudet.
