Berks Falls To Widener

CHESTER, Pa. — Penn State Berks faced a tough 14-1 defeat against Widener University on Tuesday at WU Baseball Field. The Blue & White managed just two hits and one run, while the Pride racked up 16 hits, including five doubles and a home run.

Widener came out swinging, grabbing an early advantage over the Nittany Lions with a strong first inning. Ryan Bauerle singled and scored along with Kevin Bukowski on a double by Brendan Raven. Myles Calderbank and Sean Burke each chipped in with RBI hits, putting the home team ahead 4-0 after one inning.

In the second inning, the Pride piled on with a three-run homer by Kevin Bukowski, adding two more runs thanks to a hit by pitch and an error, making it 9-0 Widener after two innings. The Pride kept the momentum in the third, tacking on two more runs as Sam Benedetti and Mark Selverian crossed the plate, increasing their lead to 11-0.

Berks got on the board in the fifth inning. Lucas Bacher walked and later scored on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Owen Grove, bringing it to 12-1.

Widener responded in the sixth, with Brian Fitzpatrick scoring on a wild pitch and Sam Benedetti coming home on a sacrifice fly, setting the final score at 14-1.

Michael Thalassinos contributed with one hit in three at-bats. Colby Crills also added a hit and reached base with a perfect leadoff performance. Grove drove in the team's lone RBI while drawing a walk. In the field, Cade Baumgardner stood out with three assists from shortstop.

Amanjeet Turka started on the mound for Berks, pitching 1 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits, including a home run, and two doubles. Turka faced 14 batters, throwing 54 pitches, with 35 for strikes. John Mudri came in for relief, pitching 1 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on two hits, issuing two walks, and recording a ground double play. Justin Fabbricatore provided an inning of relief, allowing one run on one hit, striking out one, and walking two. Tyler Gilbert wrapped up the pitching, going two innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
