READING, Pa. — Penn State Berks faced off against cross town foe Alvernia University and came up short with a 9-4 loss on Tuesday at Angelica Park.
Cade Baumgardner chipped in with a double, marking one of the Nittany Lions' five hits in this matchup.
Alvernia jumped ahead in the second inning when Jake Chapman brought in two runs with a single through the right side. After two innings, Berks found themselves down 2-0. The Golden Wolves padded their lead in the third as Bobby Hansen's double to left center added another run. By the end of the third, Alvernia was up 3-0.
The fourth inning saw the Blue & White break through, thanks to
Jackson Brancato's two-RBI single down the left field line, scoring
Andrew Seibert and
Carson Brey. Alvernia led 3-2 after four innings.
In the fifth, Alvernia fired back with a four-run rally, highlighted by Joe Glass's two-RBI single down the right field line. This stretched the Golden Wolves' lead to 7-2 by the end of the fifth.
Berks managed to add a run in the sixth when
Michael DeRichie scored on a catcher's throwing error, making it 7-3 Alvernia. The Golden Wolves tacked on two more runs in the seventh with RBI doubles from Jake Chapman and Mike Pulcini, pushing the score to 9-3 Alvernia through seven.
In the eighth, the Nittany Lions scored again on
Jackson Brancato's double to left center, bringing home
Michael DeRichie. The score settled at 9-4 Alvernia after eight innings. Berks could not cut into the deficit in the ninth inning, sealing a 9-4 win for the Golden Wolves.

Michael DeRichie scored twice, drew a walk, and laid down a sacrifice hit.
Andrew Seibert contributed with a hit and was hit by a pitch, keeping the team in the game.

Travis Loy took the mound for 5 innings, giving up 7 earned runs on 9 hits, walking 2, and hitting 2 batters. He faced 28 batters, threw 87 pitches, 51 for strikes, but didn't record any strikeouts.
Amanjeet Turka came in relief, pitching 2 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits, with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
John Mudri closed it out with a scoreless inning, allowing just 1 hit and achieving a WHIP of 1.00 in his 13-pitch outing.
