KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Penn State Berks had earn a split on the final day on the diamond at THE Spring Games, securing a 5-1 victory over Anderson (Ind.) before falling to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) with a final score of 7-1.
In the first game against Anderson, the Blue & White struck first in the opening inning when
Shayna Morales singled and advanced to third on an error.
Natasha Hornung brought her home with a groundout, giving Berks a 1-0 lead. The momentum continued into the third inning when
Emma Infantino hit a three-run homer to left field, scoring
Haylie Mauger and Morales, extending the lead to 4-0.
Autumn Weil later scored on an error in the fourth, increasing the advantage to 5-0.
The Ravens managed to score once in the sixth inning with Avery Owens crossing the plate on a single by Maddie Schoenradt, but Berks maintained control and closed out the game.
Emma Infantino stood out by hitting a home run and driving in four runs.
Haylie Mauger contributed with two hits and scored a run, while Morales scored twice and added a hit.
Paige Brightwell delivered a complete-game performance, pitching 7 innings while allowing only 1 earned run, striking out 7 batters, and demonstrating control with 71 strikes out of 110 pitches. Her efforts included a low WHIP of 0.86, significantly contributing to Berks's strong defensive stand.
In their second game of the day, Berks opened the scoring against WPI in the second inning when
Natasha Hornung walked and advanced to third on
Samantha Harple's sacrifice.
Maura Gorman then singled down the right-field line, bringing Hornung home, putting the Blue & White ahead 1-0. However, WPI quickly responded, scoring three runs in the third inning, including a two-RBI single from Ariana Kreuzer, which shifted the score to 3-1 in favor of the Goats.
WPI continued to extend its lead in the fourth inning, scoring three more runs and ultimately leading 6-1 by the end of the inning. The Goats added another run in the sixth, bringing the final score to 7-1.
Natasha Hornung recorded a strong performance with two hits and a run scored, while
Maura Gorman drove in the team's only RBI, also pitching 2 2/3 innings and allowing one earned run.
Shayna Morales demonstrated patience at the plate, collecting two walks.
Mallory Johnson pitched for 3 1/3 innings, facing 22 batters and allowing seven hits, with six runs scored against her.
WHO'S NEXT
Berks will return back to Pennsylvania to face Swarthmore College on Thursday, March 19, the game is set for a 3 p.m. start.
