Nittany Lions Swept by Garnet

SWARTHMORE, Pa. — Penn State Berks faced a tough day against Swarthmore College in a doubleheader on Thursday, losing the first game 5–1 and the second game 9–0.

In Game 1, the Nittany Lions managed five hits, including two doubles, but were unable to overcome Swarthmore's ten hits and five runs. Swarthmore took an early lead in the first inning with Iris Barone tripling to left center and scoring on Regan Valenzuela's groundout, ending the inning at 1–0 in favor of the Garnet.

The third inning saw Swarthmore extend its lead as Emilee Espinoza walked and advanced to third on Avery McClure's single. Linnaea Rasmussen then doubled to right field, bringing both runners home, making it 3–0. In the fourth inning, Swarthmore added another run when Avery McClure singled to drive in Valenzuela, who reached base on an error, leaving the score at 4–0.

Penn State Berks got on the board in the fifth inning when Paige Brightwell doubled down the right field line, and Autumn Weil followed with a single up the middle to bring Brightwell home, making it 4–1. However, Swarthmore added another run in the sixth inning. Avery McClure singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Linnaea Rasmussen. The Garnet prevented the Nittnay Lions from threatening down the stretch, securing the 5-1 victory.

Paige Brightwell excelled by hitting two doubles and scoring one run, pitching a complete game, striking out five batters over 6 innings, but was credited with the loss, bringing her record to 2-3 for the season.

In Game 2, the Nittany Lions struggled significantly, managing only one hit against Swarthmore's dominant offense, which amassed 11 hits in a decisive 9–0 victory. Swarthmore once again took an early lead in the first inning with Iris Barone tripling to left center and scoring on a wild pitch. Emilee Espinoza tripled, followed by an Avery McClure RBI single, with Kate Borza and Serafina Tinio each contributing with RBIs, bringing in a total of five runs in the inning.

Swarthmore continued to dominate in the second inning, adding two more runs as Barone singled and advanced on an error, allowing Espinoza to reach base. McClure's double brought both runners home, extending the lead to 7–0.
