MIDDLETOWN, PA — Penn State Berks fell to Penn State Harrisburg, 54-39, at the Capital Union Building. The Blue & White managed 10 steals but struggled with a 24.6 shooting percentage from the field.
Berks began the first quarter with a defensive effort, securing four steals and limiting Penn State Harrisburg's opportunities in transition. Early in the quarter,
Gabrielle Merritt connected on a 3-pointer, assisted by
Gianna Roberts, to keep the game close at 6-3.
Annie Laubach added a layup to tie the score at 6. However, Harrisburg responded with a strong offensive push, capitalizing on second-chance points and bench contributions to build a lead. Despite
Hailey Miller's efforts in scoring a layup and contributing defensively with three rebounds and a steal, the quarter concluded with Harrisburg leading 21-8.
Berks began the second quarter by capitalizing on turnovers, with
Kiara Altine's steal at 9:02 leading to a jumper by
Jalyn Hann, reducing the deficit.
Gianna Roberts contributed significantly with assists on key scoring plays, including a 3-pointer from
Gabrielle Merritt at 5:13, helping to narrow the gap. Despite the early 18-point lead by Harrisburg, Berks responded with a steady offensive effort, outscoring their opponents 14-12 in the quarter. The quarter closed with
Annie Laubach sinking two free throws, cutting the margin to 33-22.
Berks began the third quarter with a series of pivotal plays, trimming the deficit with a scoring run led by
Hailey Miller, who contributed a jumper and a layup. Laubach's assist to Miller for a 3-pointer further reduced the margin. Defensive efforts were highlighted by steals from both Miller and Laubach, disrupting Harrisburg's offense. Despite cutting the lead to four points, the Lions regained control with key free throws and a layup by Molli Hogbin, extending their advantage. The quarter closed with
Gabrielle Merritt adding a layup for Berks, but Harrisburg maintained their lead. The score at the end of the third was tied for the quarter, with both teams scoring 13 points, leaving the overall score at 46–35 in favor of Harrisburg.
The fourth quarter commenced with a quick start by Harrisburg, capitalizing on a fast break 3-pointer by Akira Cho, extending their lead. Berks attempted to respond as
Gabrielle Merritt scored a jumper off an assist from
Gianna Roberts, but turnovers hindered their offensive rhythm. Despite defensive rebounds from
Jalyn Hann and
Hailey Miller, Berks struggled to convert opportunities, missing several field goals. The Lions maintained momentum through fast-break plays and a crucial layup by Cho, which widened their advantage late in the quarter. Berks remained persistent on defense with steals from Hann, but their efforts fell short against Harrisburg's persistent scoring. As the quarter concluded, the Lions held a significant lead, closing the game with a 54–39 victory.
Hailey Miller recorded a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while also collecting five steals.
Gabrielle Merritt added 10 points and secured nine rebounds, including two 3-pointers.
Gianna Roberts contributed with seven assists and four rebounds, despite not scoring.
Jalyn Hann finished with nine points and two steals, converting 4 of 7 field goal attempts.
