READING, Pa. — Penn State Berks opened United East Conference play with a decisive 68–39 victory over Valley Forge on Wednesday night at the Beaver Athletics & Wellness Center. The Nittany Lions controlled the game from the opening tip, fueled by balanced scoring and dominant rebounding.
Berks stormed out to a commanding first quarter, outscoring Valley Forge 26–4. Berks' defense forced seven turnovers in the frame, converting them into fast-break opportunities. Gabrielle Merritt and Jalyn Hann set the tone inside, combining for multiple offensive rebounds and put backs. Hailey Miller added early baskets in the paint, while Annie Laubach facilitated the offense with crisp passing. By the end of the quarter, The Nittany Lions had established a 22-point cushion.
In the second quarter, Berks continued to apply pressure, holding Valley Forge to just five points. Miller and Merritt attacked the rim, drawing fouls and converting free throws. Penn State Berks bench contributed six points in the period, while the defense collected eight steals. Berks entered halftime with a 43–9 lead, dominating the paint with 32 first-half points inside.
The Patriots showed resilience in the third quarter, scoring 13 points behind Telia Robinson's strong play in the post. Nyla Jones added a jumper and free throws to spark Valley Forge's offense. However, Berks maintained control thanks to Miller's steady scoring and Hann's rebounding presence. The Nittany Lions closed the quarter ahead 57–22.
The fourth quarter saw Valley Forge put together its best offensive stretch, scoring 17 points. Lucy Mauerman led the Patriots with a pair of baskets and free throws, while Robinson continued to battle inside. Berks countered with balanced scoring from Miller, Merritt, and Abigail Pfander, ensuring the lead never wavered. The Lions finished the night with a 68–39 win, securing their first conference victory of the season.
Miller paced Berks with 19 points on 9-of-17 shooting, adding eight rebounds and three steals. Merritt posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Hann matched her on the glass with 10 boards, while Laubach chipped in five points and three assists. Pfander contributed seven points and six rebounds off the bench.
