READING, Pa. — Penn State Berks opened United East Conference play with a thrilling 62–60 victory over Valley Forge on Wednesday night at the Beaver Athletics & Wellness Center. In a game defined by pace, intensity, and resilience, both teams fought for the full 40 minutes before Berks secured its first home win of the season and a 1–0 start in league play.
Berks and Valley Forge traded baskets throughout the opening half, with momentum swinging back and forth. Valley Forge leaned on the inside presence of William Lawder and Isaiah Reece, while Berks countered with perimeter shooting from Isaiah Cotten and Jaedon Mast. The Patriots held a narrow 29–28 edge at halftime, underscoring how evenly matched the contest was.
The pace only intensified after the break. Every possession mattered as both sides exchanged defensive stops and fast‑break opportunities. Matthew Gingerich anchored Berks in the paint with 14 rebounds and two blocks, while Quentin Wright added nine boards and four rejections to stifle Valley Forge's attack. On the other end, Lawder powered Valley Forge with a double‑double, and Mike Gaines provided a spark off the bench.
With the score tight in the final minutes, Berks' defense forced key turnovers and Cotten delivered clutch baskets to edge the Nittany Lions ahead. Valley Forge battled until the final buzzer, but Berks held strong down the stretch, sealing the 62–60 win in front of their home crowd.
Cotten finished with 10 points, Mast added 10 points and four assists, Gingerich pulled down 14 rebounds to go with eight points, and Wright contributed eight points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. Valley Forge was led by Lawder's 14 points and 11 rebounds, Reece's 12 points and seven boards, and Gaines' nine points off the bench.
