Lions Drop Road Contest at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Wilkes defeated Penn State Berks 76-30, with a dominant first quarter that saw them outscore their opponent 34-5. This marked the first away game for Penn St.-Berks, providing a valuable learning experience as they look to build on their strengths.

The Colonels established early control with a strong defensive effort, forcing 12 turnovers from Penn State Berks in the first quarter. Despite early struggles, Hann's defensive rebounds and Miller's successful free throws added some points for the Nittany Lions. Merritt capped the scoring for the Lions with a 3-pointer at the 47-second mark. Wilkes maintained momentum by capitalizing on turnovers and controlling the pace with 18 points in the paint and 6 fast-break points. By the end of the first quarter, the Colonels led 34-5.

Wilkes capitalized on turnovers and fast breaks in the second quarter, gaining momentum with a series of successful possessions. Miller made an early jumper with an assist from Pfander, providing a brief offensive highlight. Despite defensive efforts, including Thorp's steal, the Colonels extended their lead. The quarter concluded with Wilkes leading 55–11.

The Nittany Lions began the third quarter with a defensive stance, blocking Wilkes' attempts and capitalizing on their turnovers. Miller's defensive rebound set up Sonzogni for a three-pointer at 7:50, sparking a scoring run. Hann contributed by hitting both free throws at 6:59, narrowing the gap. The Colonels managed only one field goal throughout the quarter while Penn State Berks continued to press with strong rebounding and forced turnovers. Merritt added to the effort with a pair of free throws at 3:11, and Sonzogni's jumper at 1:05 capped the scoring drive. The quarter closed with the Lions outscoring Wilkes 13-2, tightening the game at 57-24.

Entering the fourth quarter, Berks struggled to maintain offensive momentum, converting just one of 12 field goal attempts. Despite strong efforts on the boards, highlighted by nine rebounds, scoring opportunities were limited. The Nittany Lions managed to add points from the free-throw line, with Pfander and Thorp contributing from the charity stripe. As the clock wound down, the Colonels maintained their advantage, closing the game with a 76-30 lead over the Nittany Lions.

Miller recorded 11 rebounds and contributed two steals. Sonzogni added eight points and tallied one steal. Hann collected nine rebounds, including two on the offensive glass. Merritt scored six points and recorded five rebounds.
