Berks Falls in United East Semifinals

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — Penn St.-Berks fell to top seeded Penn St.-Harrisburg in the United East Semifinals by a final score of 4-0 on Tuesday, November 4 at the Turf Complex.

The first half began with Berks establishing defensive strength as goalkeeper Sophia Gonzalez made multiple critical saves to keep the match scoreless. The Harrisburg applied early pressure, including a shot by Olivia Sgrignioli that was saved by Gonzalez in the 8th minute. Despite Harrisburg's multiple attempts, including shots from Kara Slavin and Serenity Hill, Gonzalez's efforts in goal ensured that Penn St.-Berks maintained a clean sheet. As the half progressed, Berks managed to earn a corner kick in the 16th minute, but could not converted the opportunities. The Nittany Lions defense held firm against Harrisburg's attacks, closing the half with the score tied at 0-0.

The second half began with the home team quickly gaining momentum. Despite multiple saves by Gonzalez early on, including a stop in the 45th minute against Ava Myers, the Lions capitalized with a goal by Diana Pon in the 52nd minute, taking the lead. Gonzalez continued her efforts with additional saves, but the Lions extended their advantage with a goal from Myers in the 57th minute. The Nittany Lions' Deery aimed to respond with a shot on goal at the 62nd minute off a free kick, but it was saved by the opposition. Defensive challenges escalated as a red card was issued to Gonzalez in the 87th minute, leading to a penalty kick scored by Slavin. The period concluded with a final goal from Katelyn Monette, closing the match with the Lions securing a 4-0 victory.

Gonzalez made a significant impact with 10 saves, despite conceding two goals in her 86:55 minutes of play. Deery contributed with one shot on goal, maintaining offensive pressure.
