Women's Basketball Drops Matchup with Owls

READING, PA — Penn State Berks fell to Bryn Mawr College, 60-40, at the Beaver Athletics & Wellness Center on Tuesday, November 18.

The Nittany Lions started the first quarter with an early layup from Hailey Miller, assisted by Gianna Roberts. Despite a strong defensive effort, including nine defensive rebounds, Berks committed seven turnovers, which hindered their offensive rhythm. A highlight came when Paige Sonzogni drained a three-pointer at the 5:07 mark, giving Berks a brief lead. However, Bryn Mawr capitalized on Berks' turnovers, and a late scoring run, including a three-pointer by Maddy Patel with eight seconds remaining, extended their lead. The quarter closed with Bryn Mawr ahead 15-7.

Berks faced a challenging second quarter as Bryn Mawr established an early lead with consistent offensive pressure, highlighted by a quick layup and free throw from Hannah Govert. Despite efforts from Hailey Miller, who converted two free throws, and Sonzogni, who knocked down a jumper in the paint, Berks struggled to gain momentum against a strong defense. Midway through the quarter, Abigail Pfander contributed with a jumper, but Bryn Mawr's Michelle Jiang kept the pressure with multiple successful field goals. Annie Laubach provided a late burst, finishing at the rim twice in the final minutes, but Bryn Mawr maintained control, ending the quarter ahead, 33–18.

The Blue & White started the third quarter by capitalizing on a turnover as Gabrielle Merritt sank a 3-pointer with an assist from Hailey Miller at 8:59. The team continued to find success in the paint, with Laubach and Sonzogni each converting layups. By mid-quarter, the Nittany Lions were able to narrow the deficit, showing resilience on both ends of the court. Defensively, the team dominated the boards, securing 14 rebounds, which included seven offensive rebounds, providing multiple second-chance opportunities. Bryn Mawr was limited to just four field goals in the quarter, as Berks applied pressure resulting in Bryn Mawr's seven turnovers. The quarter ended with Hailey Miller completing a layup at 16 seconds, closing the quarter with a 12-9 advantage but trailing 42-30 overall.

Berks began the fourth quarter with a defensive effort, but Bryn Mawr maintained their scoring momentum. Merritt contributed with a 3-pointer early in the quarter, narrowing the gap slightly. However, Bryn Mawr responded with effective plays in the paint, extending their lead. Despite efforts by Miller, who added two free throws, the Blue & White struggled to close the gap. Their offensive output was challenged by turnovers and missed opportunities, while Bryn Mawr capitalized on fast breaks and second-chance points. The quarter concluded with Bryn Mawr ahead, with a final score of 60-40.

Merritt scored 11 points, making three of her four 3-point attempts and collecting seven rebounds. Miller contributed with nine points and recorded a game-high 10 rebounds, along with three steals. Laubach added eight points and three rebounds but struggled with turnovers, finishing with eight. Sonzogni chipped in seven points, including one 3-pointer, and gathered three rebounds.
