ST. MARY'S CITY, MD — Penn State Berks had their run in the United East Championship Tournament come to an end as they were defeated by #1 St. Mary's College of Maryland by a score of 5-0 on Saturday, November 1 at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
The opening period saw intense pressure from St. Mary's (MD) as they took an early lead with a goal in the 8th minute by Nick Haney, assisted by Lucas Evans. St. Mary's continued their offensive drive, adding a second goal in the 11th minute, again involving Evans, who scored this time with an assist from Haney. Berks faced challenges in breaking through the St. Mary's defense, with their significant opportunity coming from a shot by
Callan Stuck shortly after St. Mary's third goal by Trey Magnaye in the 41st minute. Despite a determined effort, the Nittany Lions were unable to capitalize on their chances, while St. Mary's extended their lead to 4-0 with a goal by Braden Kindred in the 44th minute. The period closed with St. Mary's holding a commanding advantage.
The second period began with Berks goalkeeper
Josh Martin immediately called into action, making four consecutive saves between the 49th and 53rd minutes. His efforts kept the scoreline intact for a time, despite St. Mary's (MD) maintaining offensive pressure. Despite Martin's saves, St. Mary's (MD) extended their lead with a goal by Jack Nelson in the 62nd minute, assisted by Ethan Wright. The Nittany Lions had limited offensive opportunities, with Stuck's shot in the 54th minute saved by Jordon Eckman. The period concluded with the visiting team unable to break through, finalizing the score at 5-0 in favor of St. Mary's (MD).
Martin recorded 11 saves during his 65 minutes in goal, facing 26 shots.
Patrick Martin contributed with four saves in his 24 minutes on the field, maintaining a clean sheet. Stuck led the team with two shots, one of which was on target.
