READING, Pa. – The Penn State Berks volleyball team fell in straight sets in a Monday afternoon non-conference matchup against Penn State Hazleton. Hazleton won the match 25-17, 25-16 and 25-20.
Jordan Thompson paced the Berks offense with 11 kills and a .296 hitting percentage. Tarynn Coldren had 23 assists and nine digs. Katelyn Wiliams (17) and Diana Stoltzfus (11) had double-digit digs.
Williams scored to give Berks a 10-8 lead in the first set, but Hazleton scored the next six to take a 14-10 lead that it wouldn't relinquish throughout the rest of the set.
In the second, Hazleton jumped out to an 11-4 lead, but Berks responded with five in a row. Makenzie Shoop and Williams started with a kill, and Stoltzfus added a kill and an ace. Madelyn Caris added a score to make it 13-10, but that would be as close as Berks would get in the set.
In the third set, Berks fell behind 8-4 but turned that into a 12-10 advantage midway through the set. Shoop and Stoltzfus each had two kills on the 8-2 run, and Stoltzfus and Williams each had aces. Berks had the set to within one at 18-17, but a 6-1 run for Hazleton put the match on the brink. Caris added a kill late to make it 24-20, but Hazleton closed it out on the ensuing point.
Berks returns to action on Thursday night at New Jersey City.
