Williamsport, PA - The Penn State Berks Softball team took the opening game of their doubleheader with Penn College on Saturday, Apr. 20. The Lions won game one 4-1 before falling 5-4 in game two.
GAME 1
The Lions struggled to find their offensive rhythm, being held scoreless in the first five innings. Berks remained in the game thanks to an outstanding pitching performance by Paige Brightwell. Brightwell held the Wildcats to only one run on four hits while striking out four. Penn College scored their lone run in the third inning, holding a 1-0 advantage through the first five innings.
Berks got rolling in the sixth inning, starting with a single by Naomi Fay. Brightwell and Peyton Vivian each reached on errors loading the bases with only one out. Lauren Ziegler capitalized on the opportunity, driving an RBI single into left field to level the score at one. Emily Smith reached on the third Wildcats error of the inning, allowing a second run to score. Later in the inning, Rylee Tineri drove a single into center field, allowing two more runs to score, pushing Berks' lead to three. The Lions turned a double play in the bottom of the sixth inning and kept the Wildcats off the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the victory.
GAME 2
Berks fell behind early in the second inning, as Penn College grabbed the lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Lions fought back, scoring in the top of the third inning. Ashley Thomas led off the inning by reaching on an error and stealing second base. Fay smacked a double into left field allowing Thomas to score and cut the deficit to one. The Lions tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. With runners on second and third, Fay lifted a sacrifice fly into left field, allowing Thomas to score again.
Penn College scored in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-2 lead. The Lions needed to make something happen in the top of the seventh inning to stay alive. Thomas jump started the offense by driving a double into left field. Hayden Perrone singled into left field, putting runners on the corners. Perron then stole second to move herself into scoring position. Brightwell lifted a single into center field, allowing both runners to score and level the game at four. The Wildcats scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the walk off victory

The Lions will host Penn State Harrisburg in a critical United East doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 24. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
