SB swept on final day of spring trip

KISSIMMEE, FL - The Penn State Berks softball team dropped a pair of contest on the final day of The Spring Games trip in Florida. The Nittany Lions fell by a score of 5-0 to Concordia College (Minnesota) to start the day, followed by a 7-3 setback to Ursinus College on the second game of the day.

In the opener, the Cobbers the scored once in the third inning and four times in the fourth, to provide all the scoring of the contest.

Naomi Fay and Hayden Perrone both went 2-for-4, while Peyton Vivian and Ashlyn Sherwood each finished 1-for-3.

Paige Brightwell allowed three hits and four runs, while striking out two in 3.2 innings of work. Mallory Duff allowed two hits and one run, with one strike out in 2.1 innings of relief.

Against Ursinus, the visitors put up two runs in the top of the first, but Berks countered with two of their own in the bottom half. Naomi Fay was hit by a pitch and Peyton Vivian drew a walk. Maura Gorman reached on an error by the pitcher, which allowed Fay to come around to score from second base. Lauren Ziegler fly out right field to score Vivian, who tug up from third.

Berks took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Rylee Tineri led off with an infield single, moved to second on a walk to Ashley Thomas, and both advanced a base on a wild pitch. Fay followed with an RBI single to bring in Tineri from third.

Ursinus jumped out in front with two runs in the top of the fourth and tacked on three insurance runs in the top of sixth to build a 7-3 advantage.

Fay finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base, while Tineri went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Ziegler was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.Vivian was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two walks, Brightwell (double) and Duff each had a hit.

The Nittany Lions return to action with their home opener against Wilkes University on Saturday, March 16. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
