READING, PA- The Penn St. Berks Softball team picked up a pair of hard-fought victories over Wilkes University on Saturday, Mar. 16. The Lions took game one by a score of 4-3 and then completed the sweep with a 3-2 victory in game two.
GAME 1
Penn St. Berks fell behind early, as the Colonels plated three runs in the top of the first inning. The Lions immediately answered back in the bottom of the first inning. Hayden Perrone led off the inning by smacking a single to second base. After Naomi Fay drew a walk, Peyton Vivian hammered a double into the outfield, allowing Perrone to easily score. Ashley Thomas drove in Fay with a sacrifice fly to cut the Lions deficit down to one.
The Lions starting pitcher Paige Brightwell settled in, holding Wilkes to only four hits in the next six innings while recording three strikeouts. Berks would surge in front in the bottom of the third inning. Vivian reached base again, this time with a single to left center. Thomas would level the score with a double that was launched into the left center gap that allowed Vivian to race around the bases and score from first. Thomas would advance to third on a single by Lauren Ziegler and then scored on a hard-hit ground ball by Rylee Tineri that gave the Lions their first lead of the game.
Brightwell shut down the Colonels attack, holding them to only three baserunners over the final four innings, securing the 4-3 victory.
GAME 2
The second game of the doubleheader started much slower, with their team scoring a run in the first three innings. Wilkes once again struck first, scoring a run in the top of the fourth inning. Berks again had an answer in the bottom of the inning started by a single from Vivian. Thomas bunted Vivian into scoring position and Mallory Duff blasted a double into left field allowing her to score and knot the game at one. Moments later, Ziegler traded places with Duff, smacking her own RBI double down the right field line. Maura Gorman kept the rhythm going with a double to left field that scored Ziegler and gave Berks the 3-1 lead.
In the circle, Duff would fluster the Colonels hitters, allowing only two hits in the entire contest. She would only allow one baserunner in the final three innings, allowing the Lions to earn the 3-2 victory.
