Softball drops two at Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, FL - The Penn State Berks softball team dropped a pair of contests at The Spring Games on Tuesday afternoon. They fell by a score of 3-2 in eight innings to Alvernia University, before suffering an 11-2 setback to Nebraska Wesleyan University.

The Nittany Lions were engaged in a good old-fashion pitcher's duel in their opener against Alvernia. Berks had one base runner over the course of the first four innings, Peyton Vivian who singled in the first inning, while the Golden Wolves had two base runners in that time, neither of which got beyond second base.

Berks went down in order in the top of the fifth, while AU got two runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning. Lauren Ziegler recorded her first collegiate home run with a solo shot to lead off the top of the sixth. Naomi Fay got a two-out rally going with a single down the right field line. Vivian followed with an RBI single down the right field line to knot the contest at 2-all.

Neither team was able to find the go-ahead run over the next inning and a half, so it headed to extras. In the top of eighth, Ziegler moved up Paige Brightwell with a sacrifice bunt to start the inning. But Berks could not get in her in and she was stranded on third. With the international tiebreak runner placed on second, the Golden Wolves also started off by sacrificing their runner over to third. The next batter sent a fly to right field that was deep enough for the game-winning to race home for the walk-off win.

Brightwell allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out four in 7.2 innings of work. Maggie Loomis surrendered four hits and two runs with four strikeouts to earn the win in the circle for Alvernia.

In the second game of the day, Nebraska Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead by after two hits and two Berks errors led to three runs for the Prairie Wolves. In the top of the third, NWU pushed across two more runs to extend its lead to 5-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Hayden Perrone and Fay had back-to-back two-out singles. Vivian followed with a double to drive in both runners and make it a 5-2 deficit. The Prairie Wolves put up a 6-spot in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up their spring trip with a pair of games on Wednesday, March 6. They will face Ursinus College at 9 a.m., followed by COncordia College (Minn.) at 11:15 a.m.
