Baseball falls to Hilbert in season opener

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 9-2 setback to Hilbert College in the season opener on Saturday night at the Ripken Experience.

Hilbert jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Nittany Lions knotted it up at 1-1 in the top of the second on a solo home run by David Rudisill. The Hawks pushed across three runs in the bottom half of the second to build a 4-1 lead. Berks got one run back in the top of the fifth when Zach Smith doubled to bring home Jonathan Myers, who doubled earlier in the inning. Hilbert tacked on two runs in the sixth and added three more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Josh Miiller struck out two batters in 2.0 innings of work, while Anthony Carpenter had one strike out in 3.2 innings of relief. Ryan Spatz and Wade Kaminski combined on 2.1 innings of relief.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a doubleheader against WPI on Sunday, March 3. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 6 p.m.
