READING, PA- The Penn St. Berks Softball team continued rolling, sweeping Albright College in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 19. The Lions overcame a slow start, winning game one by a score of 5-0 and then powered to an 8-0 mercy rule victory in the nightcap.
GAME 1
The Lions got off to a slow start, relying on starting pitcher Paige Brightwell to keep Albright off balance. Brightwell was dominant pitching all seven innings, shutting out the Lions while allowing eight hits and posting three strikeouts.
Berks got the bats rolling in the fourth inning, starting with a bunt single by Naomi Fay. Peyton Vivian followed with a single to right field and then Ashley Thomas moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Brightwell then helped herself, blasting a single into left center field, scoring both runners.
The Lions slowly pulled away, plating a run in each of the final three innings. In the fifth inning, Vivian smacked a single into left field, allowing Savannah Wilson to score. Emily Smith plated a run in the sixth inning with a hard grounder on the right side of the infield. Finally, Rylee Tineri capped off the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh that scored Fay.
GAME 2
Berks capitalized on their momentum from their game one victory, quickly jumping ahead in game two. Hayden Perrone led off the game with a single into left field. Fay and Vivian both drew walks, loading the bases for the Lions. Lauren Ziegler then drew a walk, plating the team's first run. Maura Gorman lined a single to center field, bringing home another run to make the score 2-0.
The Lions added two more runs in the second inning. Perrone once again started the rally, drawing a walk. Fay hit a single to third base and then both runners advanced on a deep fly ball from Vivian. Mallory Duff laced a single into left field, plating both runners to make the score 4-0. Berks had another pitching performance by Duff, who pitched all 5.0 innings, allowing only two hits.
Berks put the game away in the fourth inning. With runners on first and second, Zigler came through again, launching a single into right center scoring Perrone. Gorman then drove in a pair of RBIs with a single to center field. Later in the inning, Jaden Pyle drove a single to right center that allowed the pinch runner Alexa Burkey to score, giving the Lions an 8-0 lead. Albright would only have one runner reach base in the final two innings, allowing Berks to capture the 8-0 five inning victory.
