Lions Split Pair of One-Run Games

Gwynedd Valley, PA - The Penn State Berks Softball team split a pair of one run games with Gwynedd Mercy University. The Lions fell in game one 3-2 and then battled back to win game two 12-11 in five innings. 

GAME 1 

The Lions got off to a strong start, scoring in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. Hayden Perrone led off the game by reaching on an error and swiping second base. Peyton Vivian drew a walk and on a wild pitch Perrone advanced to third putting a pair of runners on base. Lauren Ziegler blasted a double off the center field fence, allowing both runners to score, putting Berks ahead 2-0.  

Berks got a solid pitching performance from Paige Brightwell who pitched all 6.0 innings recording five strikeouts in the contest. Gwynedd Mercy battled back scoring in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 3-2 edge heading into the seventh inning. Berks would get a runner into scoring position in the seventh inning, but could not bring her home, falling 3-2.  

GAME 2  

The Lions once again struck first, scoring in the top of the first inning of game two. Vivian drove in the team's first run, hitting a single into center field that allowed Naomi Fay to score. Later in the inning, Maura Gorman belted a double through the left side, bringing in a run, making the score 2-0. Gwynedd Mercy answered back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the 3-2 lead.  

Berks went right back to work, retaking the lead in the top of the second inning. The Lions put runners on the corners for Perrone and she hammered a triple deep into right field, scoring both runners. Fay then hit a hard ground ball on the right side of the infield, allowing Perrone to score and give Berks a 5-3 advantage. Once again Griffins responded, this time driving in five runs to retake an 8-5 lead.  

The Lions offense did not flinch, responding in the top of the third inning. Berks worked the bases loaded with one out for Jaden Pyle who slapped a single into left center field, allowing two runners to score. Later in the inning, Savannah Wilson hit a hard ground ball that scored a run, tying the game at eight.  

Gwynedd Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the third inning to recapture the lead. With darkness quickly approaching, the Lions tried to make one last push in the top of the fifth inning. Berks put runners on first and second base with one out in the inning. Wilson lifted a single into right center field that plated Alexa Burkey and tied the game at nine. Later in the inning, Fay drove home an RBI with a ground ball that put the Lions ahead by one. Vivian extended the lead with a single to right center that brought home two more runs, pushing Berks' lead to three.  

The Griffins would not go away, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to close within a single run. With two outs and a runner on third, the Lions pitcher Gorman drew a pop to escape the inning. The game was then called for darkness, with Berks holding on for a 12-11 victory.   

WHO'S NEXT  
The Lions will return home and start conference play, hosting Penn St. Abington in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Mar. 27. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
