READING, Pa. – The Penn State Berks volleyball team suffered a 3-0 straight set match (25-23, 25-13, 25-19) to Cairn on Wednesday night in United East Conference action.
Sophomore
Katelyn Williams led the Nittany Lions with seven kills while adding 10 digs and two assists. Senior
Jordan Thompson compiled six kills, four aces, and two digs and sophomore
Libby Swoyer led the team with 12 digs while posting eight assists. Freshman
Tarynn Coldren paced the offense with 12 assists
The Highlanders took an early 5-3 lead in the first set before the Nittany Lions won six of the next eight points to go up 9-7. Cairn worked its way back to tie the set at 10 and Berks responded with four straight points to go up 14-10 and force a Highlander timeout. The Nittany Lions continued to maintain a lead and went up 19-16 following a kill from Williams. However, the Highlanders won four straight points to go up 20-19. Berks tied the set up at 21 before Cairn won back-to-back points to go up 23-21. The Nittany Lions had a chance to force extra points down 24-23, but an attack error sealed the set for Cairn.
In the second, Cairn jumped out to a 3-1 lead and eventually went up 7-5. Berks tied the second set up at eight before the Higlanders won eight of the next nine points to take a 16-9 lead. Cairn continued to pull away as they won six straight points to go up 22-10 and closed the set out at 25-13.
The Nittany Lions started strong in the third set and took a 6-2 lead, but Cairn struck back with four straight points that tied the set at six. Berks countered by extending its lead back out to four points to 12-8. However, Cairn won 11 of the next 12 points to take control of the set at 19-13. Berks made a last charge by winning five of the next six points that cut the deficit down to 20-18. Cairn closed the match out by taking five of the next six of their own points.
Berks returns to action on Saturday, October 12th as they will travel to face Cedar Crest in United East Conference action at 1:00 p.m.
