Rosemont, Pa.- The Penn St. Berks Women's Volleyball Team picked up a key United East Conference victory, knocking off Rosemont College in straight sets. The Lions won the match by set scores of 25-13, 26-24 and 25-13
Berks (6-12 Overall, 2-4 UEC) started fast, holding a 6-4 lead after back-to-back kills by
Diana Stoltzfus. The Ravens (2-16 Overall, 1-6 UEC) kept pace, remaining within striking distance. The Lions finally took control of the set, rattling off five-straight points powered by a service ace from
Makenzie Shoop and a kill by
Katelyn Williams. The Blue & White won six of the final seven points with a service ace by
Jordan Thompson securing the opening set victory.
The Lions used the momentum from their opening set victory, racing out to an 8-3 lead. Thompson rattled off three-straight service aces as part of the early flurry. Berks stretched the lead to 10, after kills by
Tarynn Coldren and Shoop. Rosemont answered back, using a 6-0 run to close back within two points. The Ravens continued pushing, taking a 24-23 lead in the set. A kill by Stoltzfus sent the set into a win-by-two situation. Berks capitalized on a pair of hitting errors down the stretch, to earn the second set victory.
The Blue & White once again surged in front in the third, with back-to-back kills by Shoop and Stoltzfus giving the Lions an 8-4 edge. Lions continued string together points with a kill by
Emily Snader capping off a 4-0 run. Later in the set, back-to-back service aces by
Katelyn Williams made the score 19-9. Berks slammed the door down the stretch with Thompson putting the finishing touches on the victory with one final kill.
The Lions were led by Stoltzfus who came up just short of a double-double with nine kills and eight digs. Shoop also had a strong offensive showing, finishing the match with eight kills and a block. Williams filled the stat sheet, posting six kills, seven service aces and nine digs in the match.
Tarynn Coldren continued to post great assist numbers, adding 19 more to her season total.
WHO'S NEXT
The Lions will continue their busy week, traveling to face Penn St. Abington on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM.
