Nittany Lions fall to Rowan in NCAA opener

MARIETTA, OH – The Penn State Berks softball team suffered a 1-0 setback in eight innings against the top-seeded Rowan University in opening round action of the NCAA Marietta Regional on Thursday afternoon.

The lone run of the game came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Payton MacNair doubled to right center field to bring in Devin DiPasquale, who singled two batters earlier.

The game moved at a brisk pace behind the amazing pitching performances by Briana Smith and the Profs Rylee Lutz.

Smith allowed five hits and surrendered just one run, while striking out four batters in 7.2 innings of work. The senior right-hander got 12 fly out and seven ground outs in early accounts as she finished with just 72 pitches thrown. Smith set down the first 11 batters she faced before Liz McCaffery singled to right field. The Profs got a runner to second with one out, but Smith got a strikeout and groundout to second to get out of the jam. She allowed only one base runner over the sixth and seventh to send the game into extras.

Lutz's final line in the box score was three hits and eight strikeouts in 8.0 shutout innings in the circle. She set down the first four batters she faced before Lauren Ziegler a walk for the first baserunner of the day. Lutz then set down the next seven batters in order before Susan Duncan reached by walk in the fourth.

Naomi Fay got things started in the fifth with a one-out bunt single, while Hayden Perrone followed with a bunt single of her own. Arizona Shreck got hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs, but Lutz got out of the jam with a ground out to short. Perrone walked in the seventh but was left stranded, while Shrek led off the eighth with a single to right. But the Rowan defense later got an inning ending 6-4-3 double play to get out of it.

Shreck and Fay finished 1-for-3, while Perrone went 1-for-2 with a walk.

In the other opening round game of the tournament, No. 2 seed Pfeiffer University defeated tournament host Marietta College, 13-0 in five innings. Rowan and Pfeiffer will face off on Friday, May 19 at 11 a.m. The Nittany Lions and Marietta will follow at 1:30 p.m.
