Softball tops Marietta in thriller; later eliminated by Pfeiffer

MARIETTA, OH - The Penn State Berks softball team staved off elimination with a late rally in a 5-4 win over No. 3 seed and tournament host Marietta College on Friday afternoon in NCAA Regional Tournament action. The Nittany Lions later had their season come to a close with a 5-1 setback to Pfeiffer University in the tournaments final game of the day.

Trailing 4-3 and down to their final out in the Nittany Lions opening game of the day, Arizona Shreck smashed a go-ahead two-run home run to right center to go ahead 5-4 to send the dugout and Berks fans into a frenzy. In the bottom of the seventh, Briana Smith got a pair of strong defensive plays from Peyton Vivian on slow rollers to her left. Savannah Wilson fielded a sharply hit grounder and got the runner at first in time to give the Nittany Lions and their fans another moment to celebrate.

The game opened up with the Pioneers tallying one run in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, Susan Duncan was hit by a pitch and moved up to second on a ground out Ashley Thomas. Smith followed with a line drive double that hugged the left field line to score Duncan and even the game at 1-all. Naomi Fay followed with a bunt single and then stole second to put runners on second and third. Hayden Perrone delivered an RBI single to right to bring in Smith from third. Perrone stole second and Wilson drew a walk to load the bases for Shreck, who sent a sacrifice fly to left that Fay was able to tag up and score on.

In the bottom of the fourth, Marietta got a two-run homer to tie the game and went up 4-3 with a two-out RBI single on a bloop single just over the infield.

Smith finished the game with eight hits and four runs allowed, while striking out three batters in 7.0 innings of work.

Shreck went 1-for-2 with a homer, a run scored, and three RBI, while Fay was 1-for-2 with a stolen base and scored twice. Smith was 1-for-3 with a double, RBI, and run scored, Perrone went 1-for-1 with a walk, stolen base, and an RBI.

In the second game of the day, Pfeiffer scored once in the top of hte first and added three more runs in the third for a 4-0 lead. They scored once more with a single run the fourth to go up 5-0.

Berks left one runner on base in the bottom of the first and stranded three runners in the second inning. They combined to leave four runners on base in the fourth through sixth inning. Berks put in one last effort with the final three outs of the season. Wilson singled with a line drive to center field and replaced at first on a fielder's choice by Shreck. Duncan singled down the right field line and Shreck was able to go from first to third on the play. Peyton Vivian got a run on the board with an RBI single to right field to bring in Shreck from third. Smith then had a hard hit ball that the shortstop snagged and got the force at second for the final out of the game.

Shreck was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Fay and Ashley Thomas each were 2-for-3. Duncan, Vivian, and Wilson all recorded one hit.

Shreck had two strike outs in 2.0 innings in the circle. Smith allowed three runs and struck out three over the final 5.0 innings of the game.

The Nittany Lions finish the season with an overall record of 28-11 and captured the eighth conference championship in program history. The Nittany Lions will bid farewell to a group of seniors that etched their names all of the record books in Susan Duncan, Veronica Maryanski, Arizona Shreck, and Briana Smith. That group will be difficult to replace, but a return trip to the NCAA Tournament with the returning group and newcoming players is the goal for next season.
