Softball sweeps Wells on the road

AURORA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks softball team swept Wells College in an United East doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions won 19-0 and 20-0, while not allowing a hit against the entire day.

Berks improves to 11-5 overall and 6-2 in the United East, while the Express drop to 0-18 overall and 0-12 in the conference.

In the opener, Briana Smith recorded her second no-hitter of the season. The senior right-hander struck out six batters and issued one walk in 5.0 innings in the circle.

Veronica Maryanski was 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI, and three runs scored, while Susan Duncan finished 3-for-4 with two home runs, a stolen base, four RBI, and four runs scored. Peyton Vivian (two RBI) and Hayden Perrone both had one hit and scored three times, while Briana Smith had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Emily Smith finished the game with four RBI and a run scored.

In game two, Mallory Duff made her collegiate debut in stunning fashion. The freshman right-hander did not allow a hit, while striking out three in 5.0 innings of work.

Duncan was 3-for-5 with a double, homer, four RBI, and three runs scored, while Maryanski finished 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored. Perrone went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple, RBI, and two runs scored, Arizona Shreck was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Emily Strupp and Naomi Fay both had one hit, three RBI, and two runs scored, while Vivian had a hit and scored three times.Lauren Ziegler went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, Savannah Wilson added two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Berks will travel to Penn State Abington for an United East doubleheader on Tuesday, April 11 at 3 p.m.
