Softball sweeps Abington on the road

ABINGTON, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team picked up a pair of wins on the road over Penn State Abington in an United East doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Huntingdon Field. Berks won 5-0 in the opener and followed it up with an 8-2 victory in the second game of the twinbill.

Berks improves to 13-5 overall and 8-2 in the United East, while Abington drops to 11-9 on the season and 5-5 in the conference.

In game one, Berks broke the game open with four runs in the top of the second inning. Savannah Wilson singled to right to score Emily Strupp, who led off the inning with a single. With two outs, Susan Duncan fly to left was dropped, which allowed Briana Smith and Wilson to score on the play. Arizona Shreck doubled to left center to bring in Duncan with the fourth run of the inning. The score remained that way until the top of the sixth, when Wilson singled to center and came all the way around to score on a double to right center by Duncan.

Wilson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Duncan finished 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, and run scored. Shreck had two doubles and an RBI, while Peyton Vivian recorded two singles. Strupp went 1-for-4 with a run scored, while Naomi Fay finished 1-for-4.

Smith improved to 7-3 in the pitcher's circle as she tossed her nine complete-game and fourth shutout of the season. The senior right-hander allowed only five hits, while striking out five and walking two in 7.0 innings of work.

In the nightcap, Duncan led off the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Veronica Maryanski to give Berks an early 1-0 lead. They tacked on five more in the third to build an early 6-0 lead. Hayden Perrone led off with a double and scored on a single by Duncan. Shreck followed with an RBI double, then Maryanski drove her in with a double of her own. Maryanski later scored on an error on a grounder by Strupp, while Fay drove in Vivian with a single to left. Berks capped off its scoring in the fourth when Shreck singled up the middle to score Wilson and Duncan.

Shreck also turned in a fine performance in the pitcher's circle to improve to 5-2 on the year. The junior left-hander scattered seven hits and allowed two runs, while striking out two in a complete-game effort.

At the plate, Shreck was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored, while Duncan was 2-for-4 with a triple, one RBI, and three runs scored. Maryanski had one double, two RBI, and a runs scored. Vivian, Perrone, and Wilson all had a hit and scored a run, Fay had a hit and an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will host Lancaster Bible College in an United East doubleheader on Friday, April 14. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
