Softball wins a pair of tight ones over Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team came out on top of a pair of nail biters in a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Abington in United East action on Tuesday afternoon. Berks won 4-2 in the opener and followed it up with a 3-1 victory in the second game to extend its winning streak to 15 straight.

Berks improves to 23-5 overall and 18-2 in the United East with the wins, while Abington is now 19-11 on the season and 13-7 in the conference.

In game one, Susan Duncan led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right center and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Veronica Maryanski for an early 1-0 lead. Berks added to its lead with one run in the second when Naomi Fay led off with a walk, stole second base and scored on a double down the right field line by Briana Smith.

Abington evened the score at 2-all with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but it was short lived. In the bottom of the third, Arizona Shreck smashed a home run well-over the fence in right field to give Berks a 3-2 lead. Berks added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth when Shreck doubled to left center to score Savannah Wilson, who had a single earlier in the inning.

Smith set down the final six batters in order to secure the victory, her 13th of the season. Smith allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out five in 7.0 innings of work.

Shreck was 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two RBI, and a run scored, while Duncan finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Smith had a hit and an RBI, while Fay and Wilson both were 1-for-2 with a run scored.

In the second game, Berks scored three runs in the bottom of the third to go up 3-0. Abington got a run back in the top of the fourth, but that is all the scoring that would occur the entire game for either team.

In the three-run third inning, Duncan and Shreck had back-to-back singles and Peyton Vivian added a two-out single down the right field line to bring in Duncan, with Vivian advancing to second on the late throw to the plate. Shreck and Vivian both scored on a single to center field by Fay to put Berks up 3-0.

Shreck turned in another stellar performance in the circle to earn her eighth win of the season. The junior left-hander allowed six hits and one run, while striking out four in a complete-game effort.

Duncan and Shreck both finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, Fay was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Vivian had a hit, an RBI, and scored a run, while Ashley Thomas was 1-for-3 with a triple.

The Nittany Lions will face Penn College in a doubleheader that has been moved up due to weather and will now be played on Thursday, April 27 at 3 p.m.
