Softball sweeps Harrisburg with a pair of shutouts

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team picked up a pair of crucial wins in a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Harrisburg in United East action on Wednesday afternoon. Berks pulled out a thrilling 1-0 win in the opener and came on strong late in a 6-0 victory in game two.

Berks moved into first place in the United East standings yesterday after Penn College got swept by Penn State Abington. They did not let that good fortune go to waste as they improved to 19-5 overall and 14-2 in the conference, while upping their season-best win streak up to 11 straight. Harrisburg drops to 18-10 on the season and 10-4 in the conference.

In game one, Arizona Shreck and Mackenzie Sawdey were engaged in an impressive pitcher's duel. Over the first three innings, Shreck allowed only a leadoff walk in the top of the second, while Sawdey set down the lineup in order the first time through. In the fourth, Harrisburg got a two-out double from Krys Moore, who had the previous hit, but Shreck got a ground out to first to end the threat.

In the bottom of the fourth, Susan Duncan smashed a home run to left center field to give Berks what would end up being the only run of the game. With the lead in the top of the fifth, Shreck forced three pop outs to first base in a huge shutdown inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Rylee Tineri drew a walk and Hayden Perrone had a double to put runners on second and third with one out, but Sawdey got back-to-back fly outs to escape the jam. Shreck tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the six and led off the bottom half of the inning with a single, but was left stranded.

Shreck allowed a leadoff single in the seventh and the next batter reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second with no outs. Shreck got a strikeout followed by a game-ending double play to Savannah Wilson, who stepped on second and fired to first in time for the out.

Shreck allowed just three hits, while matching her career-high with seven strikeouts. She improved to 8-2 in the circle, while recording her seventh complete-game and third shutout of the season.

In the second game, Briana Smith had a two-out double off the fence in left field to score Veronica Maryanski, who singled to leadoff the inning. Berks added another run in the third when Wilson had a leadoff single and scored on a double by Shreck. The score remained 2-0 until Berks added four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Shreck doubled and came around to score on a throwing error during a sacrifice bunt by Naomi Fay. Fay and Maryanski scored on a double to the right center field gap by Peyton Vivian. Vivian later scored on a dropped ball by the right fielder off the bat of Smith. Berks, in need of two runs for the mercy rule, had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth, but were unable to get them in. Much like the first game, Harrisburg had back-to-back singles to start the top of the seventh. Smith got a grounder to third, which Vivian fielded and quickly stepped on third then three to first for the double play. Smith forced a come backer which she fielded and gave an underhand toss to first to seal the win.

Smith scattered seven hits and struck out three in the shutout win. She improves to 11-3 in the circle, while picking up her 12th complete-game and sixth shutout of the season.

Shreck was 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI, and one run scored, Vivian had one hit, two RBI, and scored a run. Maryanski finished with a hit and two runs scored, while Wilson added a hit and scored a run.
