Softball sweeps Gallaudet on Senior Day

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team picked up a sweep over Gallaudet University in a United East doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions won 2-0 in the opener, followed by a 10-4 victory in the second game.

With the wins, Berks moves to 17-5 overall and 12-2 in the United East, while the Bison fall to 11-19 on the season and 5-11 in the conference.

Prior to start of game one, the Nittany Lions honored Susan Duncan, Veronica Maryanski, Arizona Shreck, and Briana Smith with Senior Day recognition. The quartet had themselves a day, as they combined for 11 hits, six RBI, and five runs over the two games. In addition, Smith earned both wins in the circle and finished with 10 strikeouts on the day.

In game one, Berks scored a run in the bottom of the first and added another in the bottom of the second for the only scoring of the entire contest. Peyton Vivian doubled to left field to score Maryanski, who had a two-out single, with the first run of the game. In the second inning, Naomi Fay got hit by a pitch, moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Smith, then came around to score on a single down the right field line by Savannah Wilson.

The Bison had runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the third and looked poised to tie the game with a grounder through the right side of the infield. But right fielder Hayden Perrone charged hard, fielder the grounder and fired the ball to first base in time to get the final out of the inning to prevent the runs. From that point on, Smith allowed just one base runner over the final four innings.

Smith allowed just three hits and struck out five in a complete-game, shutout to get her ninth win of the season.

Maryanski finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Vivian had a double and an RBI. Fay was 1-for-2 with a run scored, Wilson added a hit and an RBI. Duncan, Shreck, and Smith all collected one hit.

In game two, Berks jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead through three innings, highlighted by a three-run home run to center field by Shreck in the bottom of the second inning. Gallaudet battled back with four runs in the top of the fourth, but Berks added some breathing room with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Shreck was 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBi, and two runs scored, while Duncan went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Fay also finished 2-for-3 to go along with two stolen bases, one RBI, and two runs scored, Maryanski had two hits, a stolen base, one RBI, and scored once. Wilson and Perrone each had an RBI and scored a run, while Emily Smith scored twice and stole a base. Vivian was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Shreck allowed six hits and four runs, while striking out one batter in 3.1 innings in the circle. Briana Smith came on in relief, allowing just two hits and striking out five in 3.2 innings to earn her 10th win of the season.

Berks hosts Penn State Harrisburg in an United East doubleheader on Wednesday, April 19 at 3 p.m.
