Softball picks up sweep over LBC

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team earned a sweep over Lancaster Bible College in an United East doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions won by a score of 6-0 in the opener and followed it up with a 6-3 victory in the second game of the twinbill.

The Nittany Lions, who extended their win streak to seven straight, improved to 15-5 overall and 10-2 in the United East, while LBC fell to 7-17 on the season and 3-11 in league play.

In game one, Arizona Shreck took care of things in the pitcher's circle and at the plate. The junior left-hander improved to 6-2 on the year after scattering four hits and striking out four in a complete-game shutout. Shreck allowed only two baserunners to reach as far as second base the entire day. The Chargers best scoring chance of the game came in the seventh inning with runners on first and second with just one out. Shreck got a fly out to Naomi Fay in right field, who then gunned out the runner trying to tag up and reach third to end the game.

Shreck finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while Fay had one hit and drove in two runs. Susan Duncan was 1-for-3 with a double, stolen base, RBI, and two runs scored. Peyton Vivian, Emily Strupp, Hayden Perrone, and Savannah Wilson all had one hit and scored a run.

In game two, LBC took advantage of Berks miscue to score one run in the top of the first. The Nittany Lions scored twice in the bottom of the second and tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Chargers plated a pair of runs in the sixth, but Berks got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning to go up 6-3.

Briana Smith picked up her eighth win in the circle after allowing nine hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out five in a complete-game effort.

Duncan had one hit and drove in two runs, Fay had a hit, two runs scored, and an RBI. Shreck added a triple and a run, Strupp singled a scored once, while Rylee Tineri had hit and an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will host Gallaudet University in an United East doubleheader on Sunday, April 16 at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, Berks will honor four players with Senior Day recognition.
