Softball splits on second day of Florida trip

WINTER HAVEN, FLA - The Penn State Berks softball team dropped its opening game, 6-5, to Marietta College, before salvaging a split for the day by topping Muskingum University, 5-3, on Monday afternoon.

In the opener against Marietta, Hayden Perrone singled to left in the top of the second to score Emily Strupp and even the game at 1-all. The Pioneers added two runs in the top of third, but Berks went to work in the top of the fourth. Ashley Thomas and Emily Smith started the inning off with singles and Perrone loaded later loaded the bases with a two-out walk. Susan Duncan smacked a ground-rule double to center to score Thomas and Smith. Arizona Shreck drew a walk to again load the bases and Veronica Maryanski singled up the middle to bring in Perrone and Duncan.

Marietta plated a single run in the fourth and fifth to knot the contest at 5-5. They got a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead at 6-5. The Nittany Lions went down in order in the top of the seventh as the Pioneers handed Berks its first setback of the season.

Duncan went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, Maryanski was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Perrone went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI, while Thomas, Smith, and Strupp all had a hit and a scored a run.

In the second game, Muskingum scored twice in the top of the first inning to build an early lead. Savannah Wilson got a run back for Berks in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly that scored Peyton Vivian. Perrone scored on a wild pitch and Shreck crossed home on an error to put the Nittany Lions up 3-2. Perrone and Duncan led off the fifth with singles and both were moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Shreck. Vivian followed with a double down the left field line to bring in Perrone and Duncan, expanding the lead to 5-2.

The Fighting Muskies pulled within two with a run in the sixth. In the seventh, Briana Smith got two quick outs before a pair of infield singles put runners on first and second. Smith forced a pop up to Maryanski at second base to end the threat and secure the victory for Berks.

Smith picked up her second win in as many days after allowing nine hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out two in a complete-game effort. 

Vivian finished 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Perrone was 1-for-1 with two runs scored. Duncan had a hit and scored a run, while Wilson had an RBI and Shreck scored a run.

The Nittany Lions will play its final two games of the spring trip on Tuesday, March 7. They face Carnegie Mellon University at 9 a.m., followed by Heidelberg University at 11:30 a.m.
