Softball opens season with a pair of wins

AUBURNDALE, FL - The Penn State Berks softball team kicked off the 2023 season in impressive fashion with a pair of wins on the first day of the Spring Break trip in Florida. The Nittany Lions opened with a 4-1 victory over Thomas College, followed by a 12-1 win in the second game of the day on Sunday afternoon.

In the opener against the Terriers, Berks broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning when Hayden Perrone doubled and Susan Duncan later smacked a two-run home run. Thomas got on the board with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Berks lead to 2-1. The Nittany Lions added to their lead in the top of the seventh with a single by Duncan and two-run shot over the fence in right center by Arizona Shreck.

Briana Smith picked right back up where she left off in the pitcher's circle last season. The senior right-hander allowed five hits and one run, while striking out three in 7.0 innings of work to earn the win.

Duncan and Shreck both finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while the duo combined for three runs scored. Veronica Maryanski went 2-for-3 with a double, while Perrone and Rylee Tineri both recorded a hit.

In the second game, Berks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the first. The Nittany Lions then scored five times in the second, once in the third, and added five more in fourth.

Duncan was 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. She had an RBI double in the second inning and had a grand slam to left field in the fourth inning.Peyton Vivian finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, while Maryanski was 3-for-3 with a run scored. Emily Smith was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Shreck had one hit and three runs scored. Savannah Wilson, who had a hit, scored twice, Ashley Thomas added a hit and an RBI.

Shreck turned in a strong effort in the pitching circle, giving up three hits and one run, while striking out five to pick up the victory.

Berks continues the spring trip with a pair of games on Monday, March 6. They face Marietta College at 11:30 a.m., followed by a game with Muskingum University at 4:30 p.m.
