Smith's no-hitter highlights split with Bison

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks softball team split its United East opener with Gallaudet University on Friday afternoon in the nation's capital. The Nittany Lions won the opener, 3-0, before having their rally come up short in a 4-3 setback in game two.

Berks now sits at 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in the United East, while the Bison move to 9-9 overall and 3-1 in conference action.

In the opener, Briana Smith recorded her first no-hitter of the season and the fourth of her career. The senior right-hander struck out nine batters and was one walked batter away from tossing her second perfect game of her career. Smith improved to 4-2 on the season with the win.

Susan Duncan led off the game with a double to left center and came around to score on a double down the left field line by Arizona Shreck. Naomi Fay, who singled earlier in the fourth inning, scored on an error by Gallaudet to give Berks a 2-0 cushion. The Nittany Lions added one more run in the top of the seventh on an infield single by Veronica Maryanski to score Shreck, who walked earlier in the inning.

Fay finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Emily Strupp went 2-for-4.

In game two, Berks got on the board first with a run in the top of third. Fay got hit by a pitch, stole second base and scored on a single up the middle by Peyton Vivian.

The Bison responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. The damage was almost worse, but Hayden Perrone gunned out a runner trying to score from second to end the inning.

Berks got a run back in the fourth when Savannah Wilson scored from second on single down the left field line by Fay. Gallaudet added to its lead with one run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2.

The score would remain that way until the top of the seventh inning. Fay continued her strong day by leading off the inning with a single up the middle and stealing second base. After Perrone followed with a walk, Duncan moved each of the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Shreck sent a sacrifice fly to right center to bring in Fay from third. Perrone advanced to third on the play to put the tying run 60 feet from home. The rally ended when the Bison forced a groundout to third base to end the game.

Fay finished 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Shreck (double), Vivian, and Strupp all recorded a hit.

The Nittany Lions returns to action with a doubleheader against Lancaster Bible College on Sunday, April 2 at 3 p.m. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but due to weather forecasts the games were pushed back a day.
