Softball sweeps Lancaster Bible on the road

LANCASTER, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team cruised to a pair of victories over Lancaster Bible College in an United East doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions won 9-0 and 13-3, with both games ending after five innings due to the mercy rules.

Berks improves 8-4 on the season and 3-1 in the United East, while the Chargers drop to 6-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions scored once in the top of the first and added five more runs in the third. They finished off the scoring with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Briana Smith, coming off of a no-hitter on Friday, recorded a shutout with five hits allowed and seven strikeouts. The Chargers had three runners get into scoring position, just one of which got as far as third base. Smith recorded her only 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth when she had two strikeouts sandwiched around a fly out.

Naomi Fay stayed red-hot at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI. Susan Duncan (two doubles) and Veronica Maryanski (double, stolen base) were both 2-for-3 with and RBI and two runs scored, while Emily Strupp was 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases. Ashley Thomas went 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored, Hayden Perrone had a double and scored a run.

In the second game, Berks scored three times in the top of the first and tacked on four more in the top of the third. LBC scored twice in the bottom of the third to pull within 7-2, but the Nittany Lions put up another crooked number with six runs in the fifth. The Chargers could only muster one run in bottom of the fifth to fall by a 13-3 score.

Arizona Shreck earned her third win in the pitcher's circle after scattering seven hits and three runs, while striking out five batters.

At the plate, Lauren Ziegler was 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored, while Fay was 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBI, and two runs scored. Maryanski finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Shreck was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Duncan had a double and two RBI, while Strupp (RBI) and Perrone (double) both had a hit, run scored, and a stolen base.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn College in an United East doubleheader on Tuesday, April 4 at 3 p.m.
