Softball sweeps Albright in home opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team returned to action for the first time in 13 days with a doubleheader sweep of Albright College in the Nittany Lions home opener on Monday afternoon. Berks won 16-2 in the opening games and followed it up with a 10-2 triumph in the nightcap.

The Nittany Lions improve to 5-3 on the season, while Albright drops to 0-4 on the year.

In the opener, Albright recorded a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take an early lead. The Nittany Lions responded with five runs in the second, two in the third, and nine in the fourth to put end the game with the 8-run rule in the fifth inning.

Susan Duncan, Arizona Shreck, and Peyton Vivian combined all collected two hits and the trio combined for 11 RBI and six runs scored. Duncan added a double and a stolen base, while Vivian smashed a home run to left center field. Veronica Maryanski was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, RBI, and run scored, while Hayden Perrone finished 2-for-2 with a double, triple, two RBI, and three runs scored. Naomi Fay (RBI) and Savannah Wilson each had a hit and scored twice. Emily Strupp and Lauren Ziegler each recorded a hit and scored a run.

Shreck earned her second win in the pitcher's circle this season. The junior left-hander allowed four hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out six batters.

In the second game, Albright again jumped out to an early lead, this time scoring once in the top of the second. Berks took the lead in the bottom half of the inning with two runs, followed by the visitors evening the score with a run in the top of the third. Berks broke the tie with four runs in the fourth and reached the 8-run rule with four more in the bottom of the sixth.

Shreck went 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base, and three RBI, while Fay was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored. Strupp went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored, Duncan was 1-for-3 with a triple, stolen base, two RBI, and a run scored. Vivian, Maryanski, Tineri, and Wilson all had a hit and scored a run.

Briana Wilson picked up her third victory of the season. The senior right-hander surrendered six hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out four in 6.0 innings of work.

The Nittany Lions will open up United East play with a doubleheader at Gallaudet University on Friday, March 31. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
