Baseball opens up conference play with win over Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team returned to action with a 10-6 victory over Gallaudet University in both teams United East opener on Saturday afternoon at Hoy Field in the nation's capital.

The Nittany Lions improve to 2-6 on the season and 1-0 in the United East, while GU drops to 6-13 on the year and 0-1 in league play.

The Bison got on the board first with one run in the bottom of the first, before Berks evened things at 1-all in the top of the second. The Nittany Lions put up a five-spot in the top of the third, but GU recorded three runs over the next two innings to make it 6-4 after four complete. The visitors tacked on three runs combined in the seventh and eighth, while the Bison plated two of their own to head into the ninth at 9-6. Berks added an insurance run on the top of the ninth and secured the win with a game ending double play turned by Kolbie Reeser.

Colin Templin went 3-for-6 with a double and a run scored, while David Rudisill (3 RBI) and Reeser (2 RBI) were each 2-for-4 with a run scored. Chad Evans also added a pair of hits, while scoring three times. Joey McGann added a double and scored twice, Tyler McGarvey recorded one hit, one stolen base, and drove in a pair of runs. Nick Bergeman and Jase Graybill both had a hit and scored a run. 

Josh Miiller earned his second win of the season after allowing 10 hits and four runs (two earned), while striking out five in 5.1 innings of work. Jake Murgitroyde notched his second save of the season. The sophomore right-hander surrendered two runs and struck out four batters in 3.2 innings of relief.

The Nittany Lions and GU will finish off the series with a doubleheader on Sunday, March 19. First pitch of game one is slated for 12 p.m.
