Women's soccer tops Harrisburg, clinches first in United East standings

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team had an impressive come-from-behind 2-1 win over Penn State Harrisburg in the regular season finale on Tuesday night. The victory propelled Berks to the top of the United East standings and gave them a first round bye in the upcoming quarterfinal round of the postseason tournament.

Berks sits at 8-8-1 in the regular season and 4-1-1 in the United East, while Harrisburg falls to 9-4-4 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference. With the head-to-head win, Berks picks up the tie-breaker over Harrisburg in the standings.

Prior to the start of the game, Berks honors Erna Hamzic, Sara Hathaway, and Morgan Kline with Senior Day recognition.

Harrisburg jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after Hannah Wheeler hip-checked a corner kick from Kylee Altland into the near post in at the 4:41 mark of the first period.

The ball remained in the midfield through the next 20 minutes before Berks was able to knot the game at 1-all. Diana Pon had a shot deflected off a Harrisburg defender and the keeper misplayed a pass that Ashley Jocham intercepted and unleashed a shot into the far back corner for the equalizer.

The teams exchanged possession throughout the remainder of the half without either threatening too much.

In the second half, Berks controlled possession early on but was not able to capitalize on anything. In the 64th minute, Berks was called for a foul inside the box to give Harrisburg a penalty kick. Sophia Gonzalez, who had made several big plays leading up to this point, made a huge stop on the shot by Katie Brown to keep the game tied at 1-1.

In the 73rd minute, Carly Fox worked her way through the Harrisburg defense and ripped a line drive from the top of the box into the top left corner of the cage to put Berks ahead 2-1. From that point, the Berks defense allowed only one shot and were able to keep the Harrisburg attack under control to secure the victory.

Gonzalez made a series of strong plays in net, stopping crosses from the end line and punching out passes inside the box. The sophomore goalkeeper finishes with three saves, while her counterpart Sydney Mulka also recorded three stops.

Harrisburg outshot Berks by a 9-8 margin (5-4 in Berks favor on goal) and held a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.
