Softball stays alive with win over Framingham State

SALISBURY, MD - The Penn State Berks softball team kept its season alive with a 9-6 victory over Framingham State University in an elimination game at the Salisbury Regional of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Due to some morning rain showers, the tournament start times were pushed back on Saturday and only two games were played. Berks and Endicott College wll play in a rematch of the Game 1 on Friday afternoon. The winner of that game will then face host Salisbury University, who would need to be beaten twice.

Briana Smith tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first, while the Berks put more base runners on in the first inning than they did on all game Friday. Arizona Shreck drew a walk and Peyton Vivian singled to left field, but the Rams pitcher got out of the jam unscathed.

Smith retired the batters in order in the second and for the second weekend in a row the bottom part of the order came through. Veronica Maryanski led of with a single through the left side, but was out on second on a fielder's choice. Hayden Perrone singled to right field and Savannah Wilson sliced a triple down the right field line to score Erin Spatz and Perrone. Susan Duncan followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Wilson, giving the Nittany Lions a 3-0 lead.

Framingham plated two runs in the top of the third and one in the fourth to even the contest at 3-all. In the bottom half of the fourth, the Rams got two quick outs before Duncan doubled to left center and Arizona Shreck doubled down the right field line. Vivian singled up the middle bring in Shreck with another run.

Smith got a shutdown inning that the Nittany Lions needed in the fifth and the offense went to work in the bottom. Smith walked and Naomi Fay beat out a bunt down the third base line. Spatz singled to third to load up the bases. Wilson hit a hard grounder that the first baseman could not handle to score two runs. Two batters later, Shreck roped a line drive to left that caromed off the fielders glove and allowed two more runs to score, making it 9-3.

The Rams had a leadoff single in the sixth, but Smith got the next three batters to end the inning. In the seventh, Smith got a groundout to third to start off the inning. Following a single, Smith got pop out in foul territory that was caught by Shreck. Back-to-back singles and wild pitch allowed to runs to come in, bringing the score to 9-5. With the potential tying run in the on-deck circle, Smith got a line out to Emily Strupp in left to end the game.

Vivian finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Wilson was 1-for-3 with a triple, three RBI, and two runs scored and Spatz had a hit and scored twice. Duncan and Shreck each had a double, RBI, and a run scored, while Smith, Fay, and Perrone added a hit and a run scored.

Smith earned her 17th win in the circle after allowed 11 hits and five runs, while striking out two in 7.0 innings of work.

Berks and Endicott will face off in their elimination game tomorrow at 10 a.m.
