SALISBURY, MD - The Penn State Berks softball team suffered a 2-0 heartbreaker to Endicott College in the opening round of the NCAA Salisbury Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon.

After Berks went down in order in the top of the first, the Gulls got a leadoff single and advanced to second on a passed ball. But Briana Smith got back-to-back ground outs to herself and an inning ending grounder to Savannah Wilson at short to leave the runner stranded.

In the second, the Nittany Lions again went down in order and Endicott put the leadoff runner on base in their half of the inning. Following a sac bunt, the Gulls got runners on first and third with one out on fielder's choice. The trail runner stole second to put two on in scoring position, but Smith got another come backer and a line out to Susan Duncan in center.

Berks was retired in order in the third, while Endicott got a leadoff double down the left field line. Smith got a pair of fly outs to the outfield, but a double and a single in the gap plated two runners for the Gulls.

In the top of the fourth, Peyton Vivian singled up the middle to break up the no-hit bid, but that is all Berks could generate offensively.

Endicott had three base runners the rest of the way, one was erased from the paths on steal attempt by Emily Smith. The other two were stranded on second base.

Smith finished the game with eight hits allowed and two runs surrendered in 6.0 innings of work. Her counterpart, Maria Hanchuck, tossed a one-hit, complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts. She struck out eight of the first nine batters before Berks was able to get the bat on the ball more over the final four innings.

The Nittany Lions will play in an elimination game against the loser of Salisbury University and Framingham State tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
