Softball earns sweep over Gallaudet

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team defeated Gallaudet University, 16-0 and 23-8, in an United East doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions improved to 13-6 overall and 10-2 in the United East, while Gallaudet dropped to 3-17 on the year and 3-9 in conference play.

In game one, Briana Smith allowed four hits and struck out eight to pick up her eighth win of the season. The junior right-hander only allowed three runners in scoring position, but was able to keep the Bison off the board for her sixth shutout this spring.

Arizona Shreck finished 2-for-3 with a triple, home run, three RBI, and two runs scored, while Smith was also 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Savannah Wilson went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Susan Duncan, Emily Strupp, Veronica Maryanski, and Naomi Fay all had one hit and combined to score eight runs. Madison Harashack walked twice and scored two runs.

In the second game, the top three batters in the Berks order combined to go 11-for-11 with 18 RBI and 10 runs scored. Peyton Vivian had two home runs, both in the bottom of the first inning, as she finished 3-for-3 with a double, two homers, seven RBI, and two runs scored. Duncan was 5-for-5 with two doubles, five RBI, and four runs scored, while Shreck was 3-for-3 with two doubles, one homer, six RBI, and a four runs scored. Naomi Fay went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Strupp went back-to-back with Vivian in the first inning with a homer to left field. Maryanski was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Hayden Perrone went 2-for-2 with three runs scored.

The Nittany Lions will travel to upstate New York for a pair of conference doubleheaders next weekend. They will face SUNY Morrisville on Friday, April 15 at 3 p.m., followed by Wells College on Saturday, April 16 at 3 p.m.
