Softball sweeps SUNY Morrisville on the road

MORRISVILLE, NY - The Penn State Berks softball team picked up a pair of shutout victories in an United East doubleheader sweep of SUNY Morrisville on Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions won the opener 11-0, followed by a 20-0 victory in the nightcap.

The wins move Berks to 15-6 overall and 12-2 in the United East, while the Mustangs drop to 3-19 on the season and 3-11 in conference play.

In the opener, Briana Smith improved to 9-2 on the season after striking out 10 in a complete-game, four-hit shutout. She did not allow base runner into scoring position until the bottom of the fifth when the Mustangs had three singles to load the bases. Smith got the final batter to line out to first to escape the threat and end the game.

Smith helped her cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Naomi Fay finished 2-for-3 with tow RBI, while Arizona Shreck was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Savannah Wilson had a hit and drove in two runs, Emily Strupp and Emily Smith both tallied a pair of runs.

In game two, Shreck struck out five batters in a two-hit shutout to improve to 6-4 on the season. In the bottom of the first, the sophomore left-hander allowed a leadoff single and the runner eventually reached third, but she was stranded there. Shreck allowed only two more base runners the rest of the way and neither made it into scoring position.

Susan Duncan, Strupp, and Veronica Maryanski all recorded three hits and combined for seven RBI, and nine runs scored. Duncan had a home run and Maryanski smacked a double. Fay stayed hot in game two, going 2-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Erin Spatz was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Peyton Vivian had a hit and scored three times, Hayden Perrone added a hits, two runs, and an RBI. Wilson finished the game 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Nittany Lions will play Wells College in an United East doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 at 3 p.m.
