Softball splits doubleheader with Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team earned a split with Penn State Abington in an United East doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. Berks took the opener 4-0 and used a late rally to force extras in game two, but fell 6-5 in eight innings.

In the opener, Briana Smith continued her excellence in the pitcher's circle. The junior right-hander allowed just three hits, while striking out nine batters in a complete-game shutout win. She set down 12 batters in order and did not allow a baserunner to reach second base until the final inning. The closest thing to a threat was the top of the seventh when Abington had first and second with one out, but Smith got of pop up to second and a fly out to right to end it. With the win, Smith improves to 6-2 on the season, with 57 strikeouts and a 1.08 ERA.

Emily Strupp was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Arizona Shreck and Savannah Wilson each had a hit, scored once, and drove in a run. Susan Duncan finished 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored, Peyton Vivian added a hit and an RBI. Naomi Fay tripled and scored a run, Veronica Maryanski notched a hit.

In game two, Berks was held hitless through the first five innings, while Abington had only one hit during that stretch. In the top of the sixth, Abington broke through for three runs to break the scoreless tie. In the bottom half of the inning, Fay broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single to left. Duncan later added a one-out single and Peyton Vivian was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Strupp singled up to middle to bring in a pair of runs and cut the deficit to 3-2.

Trailing by the same score in the bottom of the seventh, Hayden Perrone singled and stole a base to get into scoring position with one out. Down to the final out, Duncan lifted a single over the infield that scored Fay from second base to tie the score and send the game to extras.

The runner placed on second base for the tiebreak scored from second on a Berks error and two-out double by Jenna Gorman added to more runs to give the visitors a 6-3 advantage.

Berks again battled back, Strupp doubled to right center to score Shreck from second base. She moved up on a groundout and scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 6-5 with two outs. The Abington pitcher forced a groundout to shortstop to seal the victory and the Berks comeback bid.

Strupp finished 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored, while Duncan went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Perrone and Fay each finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Shreck allowed six hits and five runs (four earned), while striking out one in 7.0 innings. Smith struck out one batter and allowed an unearned run in one inning of relief.
