Spatz shines on Senior Day

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team dropped a pair of game to Penn College, 6-2 and 3-1, in the final game of the regular season for both teams.

With the losses, Berks drops to 24-11 overall and 21-7 in the United East, while the Wildcats improved to 27-8 on the season and 25-3 in the conference. Penn College finishes the regular season first in the standings and will host the United East Championship next weekend. Penn State Harrisburg is second in the standings, followed by Berks and Penn State Abington at third and fourth, respectively.

Prior to game one, Erin Spatz was recognized with Senior Day honors. She would go on to enjoy some success in both games.

In game one, the Wildcats scored a run in the top of the first, but Berks jumped ahead with two runs in the third. Penn College combined for five runs in the fifth and sixth to go up 6-2. Spatz tried to get a rally going with a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth, but the offense could not get anything going. In the bottom of the seventh, Hayden Perrone, Susan Duncan, and Arizona Shreck all hit the ball hard in the seventh, but the left fielder ran down all three of the balls in the gap.

Shreck was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Emily Strupp was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Peyton Vivian, Veronica Maryanski, Spatz, and Savannah Wilson all had hits.

Shreck allowed 12 hits and six runs, while striking out four in 7.0 innings of work.

Spatz, who has pitched 11.0 innings in her career, made the start in the circle in game two. After allowing two runs in the first inning, she settled down and only allowed one more run over the final six innings. She finished the game with six hits and three runs allowed, while striking out one in a complete-game effort.

Briana Smith was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Shreck, Wilson, and Maryanski all had a hit. Vivian scored the lone run of the game for Berks on the double by Smith.

Berks will face No. 2 seed Penn State Harrisburg in the first round of the United East Championship on Friday, May 6 at 12 p.m.
