Berks heading to United East title game after shutting out Harrisburg

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team will is heading to the United East Championship after defeating Penn State Harrisburg, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon in the semifinal round.

Berks will fact No. 1 seed Penn College around 3:15 p.m. this afternoon with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line.

Berks was able to break things open with five runs in the third inning. They added one more run in the fourth and tacked on another in the sixth to build a seven-run lead.

Briana Smith was superb in the pitcher's circle. The junior right-hander tossed a complete-game, shutout with four hits allowed and five strikeouts. She retired the side in order four times and did not allow a runner in scoring position until the bottom of the seventh.

Emily Strupp went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while Smith was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Hayden Perrone and Savannah Wilson each had two hits and combined for three RBI. Arizona Shreck (double), Susan Duncan, and Peyton Vivian each had a hit and combine to score four runs. Vivian also had an RBI and stole a base.

Berks is in the conference championship for the first time since the 2019 season. In that contest, Berks defeated Penn College by a score of 3-2.
